About the country data
How many countries does LocaleSense cover?
197 markets — all 195 UN member and observer states plus Hong Kong and Taiwan. Every profile carries the same schema: currency and formatting, tax, payment methods, locale, phone and compliance flags.
Where does the country data come from?
Formatting fields are derived from ICU/CLDR and re-verified against it by an automated test on every build. Tax rates are researched against national tax authorities, payment methods against local market sources, and FX comes straight from central banks. Sanctions flags derive from public OFAC and FATF lists.
How often is the data updated?
Every release re-checks tax rates and formatting, and scheduled changes are tracked ahead of their effective date — profiles have caught VAT changes in Kazakhstan, Fiji and Slovakia before they surprised anyone. Anything we cannot verify is flagged, never guessed.
What if a country has no VAT or no single national rate?
The profile returns null for the tax rate rather than a fabricated number — true for a handful of markets with no consumption tax and for federal systems where tax is set below national level.
